Authenticity, originality and condition are different questions

A genuine watch may contain replacement service components, an aftermarket dial or later-added stones. Jewellery can have repairs, alterations or replaced fittings. Our assessment distinguishes the identity of the piece from questions about its original configuration and present condition.

Explain your concern when enquiring: a recent purchase, an inherited item, a changed dial or uncertain paperwork may each call for a different scope. The agreed inspection determines what can be checked and reported.

Why photographs are only the starting point

Photographs help identify the model and decide the next step, but they cannot establish everything about a movement, internal markings, materials or concealed alterations. Documents also need to be considered alongside the actual piece.

Our watch specialist, who previously spent seven years with an authorised Rolex distributor, opens the case to examine the movement, markings and component originality. We also remove the bracelet to check relevant bracelet and case markings for consistency. These findings are assessed together; matching numbers alone are not conclusive proof.

What to bring to a London appointment

Bring the watch or jewellery together with its box, certificate, warranty card, purchase invoice and service records where available. Include spare links, straps and any documents relating to repairs or stone setting. Missing paperwork should be disclosed, but you can still enquire about an assessment.

Our office is at 4 Lowndes Street, Belgravia, London SW1X 9ET. Appointments allow us to confirm who will inspect the piece and which checks are appropriate. Agree packing, insurance and receipt arrangements before sending anything by post.

A clear report with a defined scope

A written report can be provided after our physical inspection. Before booking, confirm the report scope, fee and expected turnaround. An independent assessment is separate from a manufacturer certificate, a service, a valuation for insurance and a guarantee of future performance. Tell us if you need any of those additional services.

If a finding is inconclusive or a check falls outside the agreed scope, that limitation should be explicit. We may recommend further examination instead of giving certainty that the available evidence cannot support.

Jewellery expertise and questions after the assessment

Our precious-metals specialist brings ten years of experience in the gold industry. Hallmarks, construction, repairs and stone settings help inform a jewellery assessment, but a hallmark or an accompanying document is not a substitute for examining the complete piece.

Ask us to distinguish the findings from any matters outside the agreed inspection. If you need gemstone testing, an insurance valuation or further specialist examination, discuss that requirement before booking. We explain the next step when the evidence is insufficient for a conclusion.
