Choosing a vintage watch to wear and enjoy
Start with how you will wear the watch: everyday, occasionally or as part of a collection. Compare the case shape, dial legibility, winding method and available bracelet adjustment. A watch that looks large in a photograph can feel quite different on the wrist. Our vintage selection brings together individually selected older watches. The term vintage has no single universal age threshold, so check the stated year, reference and supporting information on each listing. Where the production year is uncertain, ask us what is known rather than relying on the category name.
Originality, service parts and restoration
Look at the watch as a whole: dial, hands, bezel, case and bracelet. Ask whether any components are known service replacements, whether the dial has been refinished and whether the case has been polished. These are different considerations and should be explained separately. Originality can matter to collectors, while a wearer may prioritise function and condition. Decide which matters to you and compare like-for-like examples. Box and papers can support a watch’s history, but they do not replace inspection of the watch itself.
Vintage watch condition and servicing
Ask about timekeeping, winding, setting and the service history. An attractive dial does not tell you the condition of the movement. Available parts, previous repairs and servicing needs can affect the practical cost of ownership. Do not assume an older watch retains its original water resistance. Confirm the advice for the particular piece before exposing it to water, and ask for a demonstration of its controls. Some older calendar mechanisms need care when setting; follow instructions appropriate to the reference.
Comparing vintage watch prices
Compare the exact reference, metal, dial configuration and condition, then the bracelet, accessories and documented history. Two watches carrying the same model name may differ substantially in originality and previous work. Ask what explains a price difference rather than judging by age alone. A rare description or a high asking price is not a guarantee of future value. If you are considering a newer alternative, compare our pre-owned watches before deciding which suits your priorities.
How Finer Lux checks watches before sale
Our team brings 30 years of combined experience, including a watch specialist who spent seven years working for an authorised Rolex distributor. Before we buy a watch for resale, we examine its identity, movement and components, and consider condition, timekeeping and service needs. We explain the findings relevant to your purchase. Ask about the particular watch and its included accessories before deciding. You can arrange a private viewing in Belgravia or learn more about Finer Lux.
